Louis Carr

Chairman, Louis Carr Internship Foundation

President, Media Sales, BET

Louis Carr currently serves as President of Media Sales for Black Entertainment Television (BET), a multi-media entertainment corporation and subsidiary of Viacom, Inc.  BET is the first national cable network targeting African-American viewers and reaches more than 80 million U.S. households.

As President, Carr is responsible for generating advertising revenues for the flagship BET network, BET Jazz and BET Interactive.

Carr began his career in advertising 23 years ago at Johnson Publishing as an Account Executive with Ebony magazine, and joined Black Enterprise magazine two years later.  In 1986, he departed Black Enterprise to accept a position with BET as an Account Executive.

His unique advertising industry perspectives and experiences have enabled him to quickly move up the ranks of the company.  During Carr’s nineteen year tenure at BET, he has served as Account Executive, Director, Vice President, Senior Vice President, and Executive Vice President, prior to his appointment to President of Media Sales.  During his tenure, BET’s sales growth has averaged 19% annually.  This growth rate placed BET in the top twenty cable networks in 2005.

Carr’s philosophical beliefs continue to challenge the media industry for change.  He believes that a lot of the problems the industry is experiencing is because the marketplace has not embraced multiculturalism.  It is still viewed as a secondary instead of primary concern.

Carr serves on several boards including the Cable Advertising Bureau, The American Advertising Federation, The Advertising Council, BET Interactive, Boys Hope Girls Hope and he is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of the Louis Carr Internship Foundation.  The foundation provides paid internships for minority students at major communication companies.

During his career, Carr has received several industry awards from multiple organizations including The American Advertising Federation, Ad Age and The U.S. Department of Commerce MBDA for leadership and service.  He was also named among the top fifty influential minorities in cable in 2005.

A native of Chicago, Louis Carr is a graduate of Drake University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
