2009 Summer LCIF Interns…

Qyana Agina

Howard University, Washington, DC

The opportunity I received to intern at a major media buying company in the heart of New York City was not only a remarkable experience, but a blessing.  At PHD-USA, I was placed in two departments that allowed me to learn about media sales and the operations that drive the success of each department.  All of my supervisors were nice, helpful, and encouraged me to continually ask questions.  This experience gave me the opportunity to get a feel for what industry I would like to settle in upon graduation and allowed me to partake in the responsibilities that go along with being a part of a team working to accomplish a common goal for a company.  I especially appreciated the intern dinner with Mr. Carr where we interns got a chance to pick his brain on his accomplished path and soak up the knowledge and advice that he was ready and eager to relay to his young “pupils”.  As Mr. Carr expressed to us, you can’t have a passion for something without first envisioning what you would like to achieve.  Thanks Mr. Carr for contributing to a vision that further fueled my passion for success.

The Louis Carr Foundation has truly blessed me with an internship with Turner Broadcasting, Inc. where I am specifically working in the digital sales department with CNN.  It is not regularly that minorities are granted this opportunity so I have embraced this advantage and used it as a way to open my eyes to new things.  I have been able to meet many producers and executives at CNN who all work on different projects for CNN telecasts.

So far I have been able to shadow a number of employees in various departments throughout Turner, create my own sales plans for possible clients and also create and strengthen connections throughout Turner Broadcasting.  The knowledge and experience I have gained from this internship will not only help me further my career in Broadcast Journalism, but also serve as an inspirational guide to fellow Journalism students.

I am completely aware that this opportunity would have not been granted without the help and guidance provided by the Louis Carr Foundation.  I would especially like to thank Mr. Carr and all the board members who helped make this journey a very informational and remarkable experience.

Interning at the world’s leading news company has been a life changing experience.  It was truly a blessing to work at such an amazing company because I have been given a unique insight into the world of media.  Working with the Multicultural Ad Sales team has given me a new outlook on our changing America and has also made me understand the prominent role of ad sales as a whole.  I was also blessed to have the opportunity to meet and shadow people in many different departments throughout the company from production to marketing, which really gave me an understanding of why CNN is such a prominent brand.  I walked in this program unsure of what my next steps would be towards my career.  However, I will walk out of this program more knowledgeable of myself, the industry, as well as where my focus should be during my last year in college.  I would like to encourage others to seek opportunities at all times and when one door closes another one will definitely open.  The experience I obtained from this internship has opened the door for many career opportunities in the future and I am truly grateful.  Thank you Mr. Carr for this great program and great opportunity.  Thank you to the LCIF staff and thank you CNN for an amazing experience.

My experience with the LCIF program was a great life experience. I worked at Media Com this summer and was one of two interns on the Dell account, which was the largest and most difficult account at the company.  I was a media planner and my daily duties consisted of writing media plans, calling representatives from various companies to get information about their websites or magazines, and setting up meetings with them to discuss their plans for the Dell.  I had to give power point presentations to these reps and also to our client, Dell, which I couldn’t believe I wasn’t nervous.  There were a lot of presentations on certain aspects of media which I found really informative and interesting. The environment of Media Com was amazing, the people were helpful, and I loved coming to work every day.   Overall, this was a phenomenal experience.

My internship working with MPG in New York has served as a significant stepping stone in my career.  This experience has taught me skills far beyond what I learned in classes.  By working with MPG I have gained hands on experience in all areas of communications, not just the fields of advertising and public relations.  Through interning at MPG I have become more professional and I have taken advantage of networking with communication professionals in markets all over the country.  This internship has been a very humbling experience and I will continue to use the skills I learned throughout the rest of my career.  Not only has this experience made me a better professional, I can honestly say that being selected by the Carr foundation has given me more confidence and made me a better woman.  I now know that no dreams are impossible if you are driven.  I was very blessed to be chosen and I cannot express my overwhelming gratitude for the Louis Carr Internship Foundation, I am forever grateful.

I am truly humbled and honored to be a recipient of the Louis Carr Foundation.  Being placed with Discovery Communications, Inc. has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to explore my passions in more than one field of communications.  Discovery has not only allowed me the opportunity to learn more about the media business but they have made me feel like a real employee within the organization, giving me real responsibilities and assignments.  Discovery fosters a nurturing environment and from the time that I walked in the doors I felt welcomed.  The internship at Discovery allows interns to develop their skills so that they may take with them upon their departure a sturdy foundation and knowledge base of their skills and abilities as well as the industry.  I am grateful for everyone at Discovery and the Louis Carr Foundation for this opportunity, it has truly helped me discover and solidify my passion for media.  I could not have asked for a better internship.

First of all, I would like to say that students with internship experience are more marketable and likely to land a good paying job that could possibly lead to a lucrative career.  For an internship can provide its participants valuable exposure to life after graduating college.  Based on the article entitled “True Value of an Internship,” written by Penny Loretto, she stated that “I think its important for students to understand the importance summer internships play in career decision-making and future job searches after college.”  I think that not only summer internships are critical to graduating students entering into the workforce, but any type of internship can prove invaluable to college student’s chances of making the transition from college to “the real world” that involves working for a living.

Thus, I feel that I’m very privilege to have landed an internship with the top cable station in the country-BET.  I feel that now I can go anywhere with BET on my resume and say “this is the reason why I should be hired!”  For my experiences here at BET have been priceless.  I mean from learning office culture, the business of sales and advertising, software that regulates the business, the language that one must utilize while engaging in conversation about this business, the managing of revenue generated from advertising, the different media outlets that are available, how to conduct oneself during and after a presentation, the importance of paying attention to detail, etc.  Yet, my most memorable experience here at BET is the fact I had the chance to learn valuable skills that are not taught in school.  I would like to say to BET-thanks!!!!

“I honestly can say that I cannot show enough appreciation to the Louis Carr Internship Foundation for this great experience.  Working at Media Planning Group in Chicago has been such a great opportunity to interact with several companies as well as gain knowledge about several aspects in media. I truly feel that I have received knowledge and new information that can really help me with my future endeavors. Throughout the summer I sat through several meetings, worked with the online and off line team for the Kmart account, and helped prepare and present an intern project. Working with media is such a great practice. This internship has helped me form relations, network, build communication skills, as well as allowing me to have firsthand experience in the corporate world. Thank you, for this great opportunity.”- Daphnay Sagaille

McDonald’s Corporation is much more than burgers and fries.  Despite the economic plunge McDonald's remains a stable powerful competitor in the fast food service business.  Having the opportunity to partake in the golden arches of success has been more than rewarding.  As an intern in the Multi-cultural marketing department, I have worked on projects focused on the McDonald’s brand as it relates to the Asian, Hispanic, and African American consumer.  My days consisted of deciding on the positioning of new menu items to the three ethnicities.  One example includes the new "third pounders" and the print advertising for the Asian consumer market.  It may sound easy, take a picture of a burger say I'm lovin it and put it in Chinatown.  But imagine thinking of a unique way to advertise burgers and then translate that to Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese! Talk about lost in translation! Although sometimes challenging, my internship taught me the importance of teamwork, initiative, and a positive attitude. Without the team within my dept I would have never known how to appeal to the Asian consumer, without my own initiative.  I would have not had the opportunity to work on projects that elevate my professional development and without a positive attitude I would have never been able to get through the rough days. I met amazing people and developed genuine lasting relationships. I sincerely thank the Louis Carr Internship Foundation for their insight and commitment to the professional development of our community and our generation. Without the foundation I would have never been here to say.... I'm lovin it!

Having the opportunity to be apart of the LCIF was an experience of a lifetime! I have learned so much about the media industry, this internship has shown me the very interesting world of media, and I was very fortunate to be apart of. Working at Starcom Media Group, has taught me the ends and out of the media industry. I have had the opportunity to work on my assigned projects, and assist on other projects. The experience of this internship is one that I will always remember; I will be able to apply my knowledge from this experience to my everyday life. I am truly grateful to The Carr Foundation for the experience and networking skills that it has provided me with.
